The 'Culture and Society' Association, national in scope and based in Asturias, will present one of its awards tomorrow, Thursday, October 17, to the Atapuerca Culture of Evolution System, for its ‘ágora’ cultural model of meetings between the public and for its work in disseminating knowledge. Alejandro Sarmiento, managing director of the Atapuerca System and the Museum of Human Evolution, will receive the award at 5:00 p.m. in the Events Room of the University Campus of Mieres, attached to the University of Oviedo. The award consists of a statuette weighing four kilos created for these awards by the sculptor Llonguera.
This is the first edition of several awards that bear the name of the association and that were created to recognize the professional worth and work of people and institutions. In this case, 'Culture and Society' sought to recognize the efforts made in the dissemination and spread of knowledge of the Atapuerca project and its work in teaching human evolution to several generations, as well as its international reach.
Additionally, the award highlights the cultural model of the Museum of Human Evolution, which, with three four-monthly programmes, has become a meeting place open to the public and which translates into multiple activities for all types of audiences in all its centres throughout the year, with a diverse programme that brings culture and science closer to the public.
The Atapuerca System is one of the ten winners in as many categories in the first edition of awards convened by this society on its fifth year of activity to recognize examples of talent, professionalism and development in foundations, groups and companies from different areas of the cultural world.
Along with the Atapuerca System and the MEH, the sculptor Vicente Santarúa, creator of sculptures such as Woody Allen in Oviedo, has received an award in this edition; the 'Humanitarians of San Martín de Moreda' Society for its trajectory in promoting tradition; the company 'Genetracer Biotech', for its research in the field of DNA; the casting director, Luis San Narciso, for his long professional career; the Federation of Philatelic Societies; Juan Taboada, for promoting traditional Asturian music thanks to his record label; the 'Amigos de Cudillero' Association, for its literary work and for organizing La Amuravela; the 'Resnova Group' for its support to the cultural world; and the journalist Ricardo Rosety for sport-related outreach.
